History & Origin: A Creature of the Mist

The Nebelung's story began in the United States in the 1980s, making it a relatively new long-haired cat breed. The breed originated from a mating between a black domestic shorthair and a Russian Blue–type cat, which produced a stunning long-haired blue kitten named Siegfried. A subsequent litter produced a similar female, Brunhilde. Their owner, Cora Cobb, was captivated by their unique appearance and, with the guidance of a geneticist, began a selective breeding program. The breed was named "Nebelung" (German for "creature of the mist") and gained official recognition from The International Cat Association (TICA) in 1987.

Physical Characteristics: The Shimmering Silver Coat

The Nebelung is the epitome of elegant, medium-sized grace. They typically weigh between 3 to 5.5 kg, appearing muscular yet refined. Their most defining feature is their magnificent coat: a medium-long, double-layered fur that is a uniform blue-gray color, tipped with silver to create a luminous, misty sheen. This shimmering coat is denser around the neck (forming a ruff) and on the tail, which is long and plumed.
